What is ai automation?
AI automation is the use of models to perform workflow steps that previously required human interpretation — reading a document, classifying a request, drafting a response — usually combined with conventional automation for the deterministic parts of the same process.

Why it matters
- It extends automation into processes that rules-based tools could never reach, because the input was unstructured.
- Outputs are probabilistic, so confidence thresholds and review routing become part of the design.
- The best implementations combine both: rules where behaviour must be certain, models where interpretation is required.

An intake process uses a model to classify and extract from inbound emails, then conventional automation to create the work item, apply routing rules and send the acknowledgement.
Common misconceptions
- 'AI automation replaces RPA.' It complements it; deterministic steps should stay deterministic.
- 'Automation means no humans.' Confidence-based routing to a reviewer is the norm, not a failure.
- 'If it works in a demo it will work at volume.' Exception rate at volume is what decides the economics.
